History of the Shellback

A Shellback is a term used in the United States Navy that refers to a sailor who has crossed the equator. This tradition dates back to ancient maritime customs and is often marked by a ceremony called the "Line Crossing Ceremony." During this event, those who are crossing for the first time, known as "Pollywogs," undergo various initiation rites, while seasoned sailors, or "Shellbacks," celebrate their experience.

The initiation serves both as a rite of passage and a bonding experience among sailors. It symbolizes the transition from novice to experienced veteran as they navigate the challenges of naval service. The tradition highlights the values of resilience, teamwork, and camaraderie inherent in military life. Today, the term "Shellback" not only signifies a sailor's experience but also embodies the spirit of overcoming obstacles, much like what aspiring entrepreneurs face when launching their ventures.

An Emerald Shellback is someone who has crossed the equator and the prime meridian (0°0’0”N 0°0’0”E), while a Golden Shellback is someone who has crossed the equator and the international date line (0°0’0”N 180°0’0”E).

Tyler became an Emerald Shellback in 2015 aboard the USNS SPEARHEAD (JHSV-1) at 0°0’0”N 0°0’0”E. Austin became a Shellback in 2015 aboard the USS GEORGE WASHINGTON (CVN 73) at 0°0’0”N 148°30’0”E. Drew is still a Pollywog to this day.
